Family Engagement in Education Act: H.R. 5211
From National PTA: "Research demonstrates that family engagement in a child's education increases student
achievement, improves attendance, and reduces the dropout rate. The Family Engagement in Education Act (H.R 5211)
incentivizes schools and districts to meaningfully engage families to close the achievement gap." For more information or to

Student-to-School Nurse Ratio Improvement Bill
Currently, Louisiana has one school nurse for every 1,931 students. Legislation is pending to improve that ratio. The Student-to-School Nurse Ratio
Improvement Bill Act would provide grants to states like Louisiana (currently ranked 38th) to reduce the student-to-school nurse ratio in elementary and
secondary schools. The goal is to have one nurse for every 750 students.
Please consider asking your U.S. Representative to support H.R. 2730 and your U.S. Senator to support S. 2750.

Update 8/10 - Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization
Updated 8/10: On August 5 the Senate unanimously passed the Healthy Hunger-free Kids Act (re-authorization of the
Child Nutrition Act), the legislation that governs the quality of school lunches.
The version that passed in the Senate
included more funding for healthier meals, regulations to kick junk food out of school vending machines,
and $50 million for Farm to School programs. The bill would
partially fulfill President Obama's request for $10 billion in additional funding for child nutrition
program by providing $4.5 billion over the next decade. The bill will now move on to the House where it
will need to pass by September 30, before the current program expires.
